THE JOURNEY OF AN EGG
Project location: Xiamen City, China
Personal project
Project Introduction
Urban environments that lack natural elements often expose children to pressures and constraints that impede their holistic development. Over the past decades, many cities have developed without regard for environmental sustainability. Children's space is constantly being squeezed and restricted, and more and more children are suffering from “nature deficit disorder”.
Nature provides a rich sensory environment - textures, sounds, smells and sights - that is essential for children's sensory development. Nature is not only a playground, but also an ever-changing classroom and space for growth, discovery and emotional nourishment.
As a famous tourist and garden city, Xiamen has very few children's parks, and Jimei District does not even have a children's theme park. Therefore, I wanted to design a place for children in Jimei District where they could create childhood memories of exploring and learning freely in nature. I chose the eggs of Xiamen's characteristic protected bird, the egret, as the basic design element, aiming to build a child-friendly park that emphasizes contact with nature and sensory experience.
